Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)

Most food and beverage wastewaters have high biological oxygen (BOD) demand from dissolved sugars, fiber and carbohydrates in their wastewater. As you know, high BOD wastewater often has significant surcharges if it is disposed into the sanitary sewer. Typically, the wastewater treatment process in food companies is to treat the BOD before disposal to the sanitary sewer. However, most typical treatment processes are subject to wide excursions and often will exceed the permitted wastewater BOD disposal requirements resulting in high fines or surcharges to the plant. Our CAST system can separate sugars, carbohydrates and other food process chemistry from the water and recover both the water and chemistry for either reuse or recycling.

Example of Benefits

As an example, beverage industry wastewater contains sugars that can come from tank rinseouts, reject product from production failures or time-expired products. Our CAST system can take recover sugar in solutions as low as 5% and return a payback of two years. One of our clients with a 5% sugar wastewater was able to remove the sugar from the wastewater and reuse the pure recovered water in its process and is selling the sugar to a nearby ethanol plant for a profit. The sugar could have also been used for animal feed. By removing the sugar, the plant also avoided $200,000 in fines and surcharges on the disposal of its wastewater each year. Our CAST system can work on nearly every type of beverage industry wastewater.
